For the most part the media depicts farming as fun and prosperous. Yes there is bad media out there but they usually depict it as a happy time. Farming and Ranching is not easy, not easy at all. You are constantly worried about weather, animals, and equipment. Not to mention how hard it is to make a living off the land these days, so hard that most farmers have to have a full or part time job on top of all their farm chores. Simple truth is its hard.
I’d say one of the worst parts of owning livestock is having your livestock die. You can try your hardest but something unpredictable always happens. You can have all the supplies ready but it wasn’t enough. You can check on them multiple times a day and yet you weren’t there in time. Its very frustrating and heart wrenching to have an animal you own die when you tried everything to prevent it. This is what the media doesn’t show. They don’t show the blood, sweat, and tears that go into raising the animals that feed this nation.
I guess this is my way of getting this hurt off my shoulders. Baby season this year has been particularly hard. We have lost a lot of babies to a lot of different complications. Some we just weren’t there in time and others it was just completely out of our hands. I want people to know that farming is hard but farming is also rewarding too. The babies we do have are happy and healthy and seeing them everyday makes it all worth it. Just remember when you are having your next meal that a farmer or rancher worked their butts off to make sure you could have dinner on the table.
